 SDG 15
The International Union for Conservation of Nature’s (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species uses spatial data for global assessments of more than 111,000 species.8 Understanding where vulnerable species are located is critical for efforts to better protect them and achieve SDG 15: Protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and stop biodiversity loss.
The SDGs aim to protect all life on Earth, including Madagascar’s vulnerable fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox), a cat-like, carnivorous mammal.
The IUCN Red List objectively assesses species and their risk of extinction based on measurements of population size and geographic range, and their trends in the past, present, and future.7 Established in 1964, the Red List has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive source on the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus, and plant species. The Red List’s curated data was used to create this interactive story that highlights some of the 37,400 species (assessed in the database so far) that are threatened with extinction.
